Climatological Study of SPEI Drought Index Using Observed and CRU Gridded Dataset over Ethiopia

چکیده
Abstract This study aims to investigate the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) using monthly observed and gridded Climate Research Unit (CRU) dataset across 13 stations in Ethiopia during period 1970–2005. SPEI is computed at a 4-month timescale represent drought Belg (February–May) Kirmet (June–September) seasons separately, an 8-month these two together (February–September). The results show that there are extremely strong correlations ( R ≥ 0.8) between estimated values from CRU values, with root mean square error (RMSE) of 4–99 mm percentage (MPE%) −30 73% most stations. For temperature SPEI, shows almost (0.6 ≤ < 0.8), while dominant RMSE MPE 0.7–5 °C −22 26%, respectively, for 0.28–0.96 −49 55%, three seasons. It also found each clusters (dry, normal, wet) has high success (≥ 60%) more than 50% stations, general accuracy exceeds 60% 75% Finally, correct hits often within corresponding cluster but may shift into another category (extreme, severe, moderate) except few events.

Evaluation of SPEI Drought Index and Trend Analysis Using Nonparametric Methods in the Selected Stations of Urmia lake Basin
Identification of trend and drought characteristics play an important role in the development and management of water resources. In this study, the spatio-temporal characteristics of SPEI index in short, medium, long and annual scales (SPEI3, SPEI6 and SPEI9) in Urmia Lake basin were investigated. for this purpose, temperature and precipitation data from 4 synoptic stations of Tabriz, Urmia,...

Deficiency and inappropriate distribution of reengage station is one of challenges faced by researchers in hydrology and climate science. In this research, evaluate the applicability of four gridded precipitation data products ERA-Interim, PERSIANN-CDR, PERSIANN-CCS and CRU as a supplement or substitute for ground data in a monthly time scales. This assessment was done by comparison with observ...
متن کاملComparison and Evaluation of Six Climatological Drought Indices and Zoning of the Most Appropriate Index Using Inverse Distance Weighting (A Case Study: Isfahan Province)
Introduction: Drought, as a natural disaster, has a major impact on agriculture and ecosystem of the affected region. Droughts occur mainly in areas like Iran being located in the world dry belt, with below normal levels of rainfall. There is a need to study and predict the drought situation because, according to statistics, Iran is among the most water-stressed countries, with serious probl...
متن کاملA Climatological Study of the Keethch/byram Drought Index in the Hawaiian Islands
1. INTRODUCTION The Hawaiian Islands have unique and varied microclimates. The localized nature of these microclimates means that they will be affected differently by the larger-scale climatic influences of the region. Included in the principal large-scale climate controls are the position of the islands on the earth's surface, the trade winds, wintertime mid-latitude storms, subtropical storms...
متن کاملMoisture Transport Anomalies over the Danube River Basin during Two Drought Events: A Lagrangian Analysis
In this paper, we provide a Lagrangian analysis of the anomalies in the moisture transport during two important drought events (1989/1990 and 2003) configured over the Danube River Basin (DRB) region. Firstly, we identified the drought episodes that occurred over the DRB in the period of 1980–2014 through the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). SPEI was calculated using ...
